A Story That Shocked Me

When I first read about Luis Alfredo Garavito, known as “The Beast,” I couldn’t believe it. During the 1990s, he sexually assaulted and murdered over 140 children in Colombia. It’s such a horrifying story that it makes you wonder: how does society deal with something so extreme?

Crimes That Affected Everyone
Garavito’s crimes showed just how vulnerable some children were. He took advantage of situations where families or communities couldn’t protect them, which makes his actions even more horrifying.

"No sentence can undo the pain he caused, but justice must be served."

When he was finally caught in 1999, people felt both relief and frustration: relief that he could no longer harm anyone, frustration because the law limited his time in prison.

The Trial and Sentence
Garavito confessed to his crimes, helping authorities solve many cases. His trial showed that:

• Colombia’s maximum sentence couldn’t match the scale of his crimes.
• Protecting victims and their families was crucial.
• Public outrage pushed lawmakers to rethink penalties for extreme crimes.

He was sentenced to 1,853 years, but Colombian law limited his effective prison time to 40–60 years. For many, that feels far too little for what he did.

Reflection: What I Learned
This case made me think about:

• The importance of a strong justice system.
• The need to protect the most vulnerable, especially children.
• How punishment and prevention must work together.

It also made me ask: can any punishment really make up for such harm? And how can we, as a society, prevent crimes like this in the future?

Garavito’s story is one of the darkest in Colombia’s history, but reflecting on it teaches that true justice isn’t just punishment: it’s also protecting, preventing, and learning.
